Wireless Sensor Networks for Industrial Applications: Practical Approach

Abstract
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) provides information for data acquisition and data distribution. It is a network that consists of spatially distributed and automated wireless sensor nodes which are capable of monitoring several physical environmental fields such as air pressure, luminosity, vibration and temperature. This paper focuses on the design of a WSN utilising ZigBee protocol and Waspmote technologies; the purpose is to provide telemetry services for industrial applications which will be required to collect data about light bulb luminosity as well as its associated surroundings. At the end of the processes, WSN framework was designed showing initial results of bulb luminescence reading, temperature and accelerometer; the designed system has the capability of sending real-time data over a network platform utilising the ZigBee 802.15.4 protocol with sensor nodes attached to the circuit board; this will provide radio frequency telemetric services, utilising a cost effective platform that has the benefits of overcoming the cumbersome measures presently in operation. Sensor networks methods of development overtime have suffered setbacks for lack of well-defined practical approach that will produce results patterned for industrial acceptance; this paper measures on this area using a model that is environmental and eco-friendly.

FEMINISM: The New Form Of Extremism!

By Macaulay, Babajide Milton
If after reading the title of this article, you say to yourself, “Not again. Male chauvinists!!!” Then you are indeed a feminist! And this article is specially written for you. As expected, some paragraphs may bore you out because it exposes some of your weaknesses, but if you can manage not to doze off, I assure you that you will pick up one or two lessons that will help improve your personality for good. Well, just to make it clear, I am NOT a male chauvinist. I am just a concerned observer who perceives the recent actions/attitudes of ladies who refer to themselves as feminists, as unacceptable! As usual, my dissatisfaction compelled me to harness this piece of detailed information from all reliable sources to express the opinions I have about feminists!
Now, we understand that certain cultures and religions around the world have not given women the rights they deserve. Some cultures and religions have confined women to the four walls of the kitchen as domestic slaves! Some others treated them as second-class citizens which have led to the advocacy for women’s right on political, social and economic equality with men by the United Nations under the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs). Even till this day, in certain African cultures, female children are still not appreciated! Some husbands also mistreat their wives or replace them if she is unable to produce a male child. Such men in their stupidity and ignorance are not even aware that the ‘Y’ Chromosome which is the needed genetic entity for the creation of a male child is actually produced by them and not by women.
I remember in 2009 during my Industrial Training at a medical laboratory in Oshodi, Lagos, Nigeria, a couple walked in to perform some medical tests – SFA (Seminal Fluid Analysis) and HVS-MCS (High Vaginal Swab – Microscopy Culture Sensitivity) – to find out why they have been unable to procreate. The husband bolstered, “I didn’t want to come here because I am damn sure I am medically okay! It is my wife that needs check-up! You have no idea how much effort I have invested just to impregnate her. I have emptied all my semen into her; pumping her mercilessly from all directions; yet no show!!! Anyway, just to fulfill all righteousness you can still have my semen to be tested. In the end, she will be convinced that I am not the one at fault but she is!” I stood behind the senior med lab scientist who later instructed me to take the EDTA bottles containing the couple’s sample for testing. I headed straight to the Microbiology Lab and used a micro-pipette to place a drop of the cocky husband’s semen on a clean slide and focussed it under an electronically-powered binocular microscope. I was shocked at what I saw. Millions of the sperm cells were not motile indicating that they were either dead or ‘tired’; they could barely swim. I couldn’t stop laughing while documenting the result. The husband had a low sperm count, therefore, could not impregnate his wife despite his turgid ‘John Thomas’ and his merciless aggressive pumping in all directions. The lesson learnt is that a man’s stature or ability in bed does not guarantee his capability to father a child. Unfortunately, the African society has brainwashed most people that once a couple cannot procreate, the woman is the culprit! These various forms of marginalisation and injustice against women has led to the need for them to survive and preserve their kind, thus, becoming proud feminists!
You hear them mentioning the names of Benazir Bhutto, BeyoncĂ© Knowles and Chimamanda Adichie without having a clue about the family lifestyle of these women. BeyoncĂ© sang, “Who runs this world? Girls! Girls!!” and unfortunately, a million gullible ladies took her lyrics literally and then end up treating all the guys around them (including their suitors) like trash without asking themselves if Jay-Z is also being disrespected! Even if the husbands of great Nigerian women like Obi Ezekwezili and Dora Akuiyuli are not popularly known, it does not mean their husbands are irrelevant in the society and subservient to their famous wives! I watched a TV programme where Dora was interviewed. She pointed out that she still cooks for her husband despite her busy schedules but many young ladies won't remember that! All they pay attention to is how to be great and famous; expecting their husbands to be in full support even if some of their lofty desires may alter their ‘natural role’ in the home. What I mean by natural role is your role as a helpmeet (as described by the Holy Scriptures). You are not meant to consciously seek superiority but to help him succeed without losing your personal dreams as well. There are times when the woman’s success will eclipse her husband’s. The way to ensure the natural order of things in such a home is for the woman to display a high degree of respect and submission despite her superior achievement because the man is the natural head (as espoused by many religions). Struggling tooth and nail to take the man’s position will not do her any good but would rather destroy her home. This is why many feminists in history were not able to keep their homes.
Most females believe the only way to break the male superiority over them is to be equally as aggressive as the males. Let us learn from the story of the British women in the 1800s when they were disallowed to vote. The first thing they did was to form a party (National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies – NUWSS) under the leadership of Millicent Fawcett in 1897. The members called themselves the suffragists and Millicent ensured they followed peaceful, persuasive tactics in actualizing their goals.  However, some members of the party felt her approach was too slow and inefficient so they broke away in 1903 and formed their own party (Women’s Social and Political Union – WSPU) headed by Emmeline Pankhurst. Emmeline referred to her members as suffragettes in order to differentiate them from Millicent’s members. The suffragettes adopted violence and destruction, thinking it was a faster way of solving the problem but it only put them in more problems. “Be very careful not to open suspicious parcels arriving by post. On the other hand, do not leave them lying unopened in the house. They should be dealt with carefully and promptly. These harpies (suffragettes) are quite capable of trying to burn us out’ (Winston Churchill’s – the British Prime Minister at that time – note to his wife in Feb, 1913). In the end, it wasn’t Emmeline’s violent tactics that actualized the goal but the peaceful approach of Millicent. The cool, calm, collected but highly focussed approach spearheaded by Millicent, eventually got British women the political liberty they deserved. Millicent coerced the members of her party to build the nation during the 1st world war when the men folks were out in the fields shedding their blood and sacrificing their lives to protect the sovereignty of their nation. The suffragists ended up building roads, bridges (one is still standing today across the River Thames in London) and many other infrastructures in the absence of the men between 1914 and 1918. Finally, in 1919 after the war had ended and peace was restored, the members of parliament in the House of Commons and House of Lords in Britain were astounded by the efforts of the women during the war and they unanimously passed the ‘women suffrage rights law’ not as a result of the stupid violence and aggression by the suffragettes but because of the sacrificial contributions of the suffragists during the war. This lovely story has shown clearly that aggression and extremism will solve absolutely nothing!!!
Male chauvinists will say, ‘It’s a man’s world’ but I will say, ‘It’s a human’s world’ because humans are the most ‘evolved’ animal species on Earth. We should have other animals under our feet rather than enslaving one of our kind (female humans). As much as I do advocate for women redemption, I will not tolerate unnecessary extremism from them. Women need to hear the truth about life, that although they were created equal with men, they are never equal with men in ALL things! Yes, we may have had women presidents such as Gloria Arroyo of Philippines, Sirleaf Johnson of Liberia, Cristina Fernandez De Kirchner of Argentina, Benazir Bhutto of Pakistan, but these women also doubled as wives, subject to their husbands when they get to their homes. This family role of a ‘helpmeet’ is NEVER a servile position as most women these days see it. It is indeed a powerful role for women who can utilize the latent power wisely. A soft and caring wife stands a higher opportunity of controlling subtly, the decisions of her husband, than a fierce and aggressive wife. Aggressiveness and confrontations only weaken the influence women should have over men. If you doubt this statement, ask yourself why the Egyptian Queen, Cleopatra, was so powerful? Even controlling the most powerful man of her time (Julius Gaius Caesar). It is important to point out here that this power shouldn’t be wheeled as a tool of manipulation or else suicidal consequences may follow!
Radical feminism aims to challenge and overthrow patriarchy by opposing standard gender roles, calling for the radical reordering of the society, but this is a cause that will never succeed because most societies rest on the fulcrum of religion. We can only extend certain rights to women but patriarchy is not negotiable, trust me! Ladies should therefore, learn to deal with the truth! Now it is true that in terms of political and professional headship, women have proven to be more effective and efficient than men, it is still not enough grounds for them to question the age-long fundamental doctrines of religions that clearly stipulate who the head of a home should be! I am aware that there are irresponsible men who are not playing their roles as loving husbands and fathers; and in such cases, women have risen up to the occupation acting as both the mother and father. However, these cases, which are anomalous, should not be presented as an evidence for the abolition of male headship. I know most of you would think I am only writing about this because I am a man but the honest truth is that I would still have written this article this way if I was born as a woman because I will respect the roles of men without belittling my role as a woman!
Some feminists are irritated to hear about a man’s superior achievement; it makes them feel powerless and inferior!  I was talking to a first class graduate of Accounting from the Covenant University some years ago who happens to be a lady. I asked, ‘now that you have won so many awards, where will you put them?’ ‘Hang them on the walls of my home of course’ then I asked a thought-provoking question, ‘Where will your husband hang his?’ I expected her to say, ‘on the same wall’ but she frowned at me as a way of saying, ‘I don’t care where he hangs his’ as inspiring as she may appear, she had a pugnacious attitude! No wonder most radical feminists don’t have husbands or actually go for men with low self-esteem, making it much easier for them to be manipulated. And as expected, feminists dread the guts of highly intellectual men because such men make life difficult for them!
Remember the aphorism, ‘behind every successful man there is a woman’ Women are natural managers and helpers but are not natural home leaders. This is why the children of single mothers often grow up to become unruly and impudent. Most people picture Margaret Thatcher as a typical role model because she wrestled successfully against her male counterparts, becoming Britain’s first and only female Prime Minister. Do you know that when she died some months ago, so many British citizens didn’t want her to get a proper burial? I know this because I live in the UK currently and heard what the people on the streets had to say about her. Her daily strive to be like a man cost her her personality and then she became a radical feminist who was ferocious and officious to the extreme. She didn’t learn to be diplomatic and it cost her a lot.
Goodluck Jonathan’s cabinet today has more women represented than any other Nigerian government in history. Even in my University (FUTA) we ensured that all student governments (from the Departmental level to the SUG level) elected female candidates strictly for the positions of vice-president and welfare director in order to preserve some form of gender equality in student politics. Despite the efforts of Governments, NGOs and many male folks round the world to ensure gender equality, women still resort unnecessarily to undue aggression and extremism.
Many ladies reading this article are guilty of extremism towards the male folks as a result of their cravings for gender superiority! How? You may ask. Well, I will break it down briefly. Sometimes some of you feel the need to frustrate a guy for no reason, thinking this would make him respect and honour you more. When you suddenly ignore online conversations for no real reason without typing the abbreviation, ‘brb’ or ‘ttyl’ and not even apologizing afterward, instead, telling the guy to f**k off that he doesn’t have the right to tell you what to do. By consciously seeking for control, ladies have turned around the order of gender injustice by refusing to apologise each time they offend a male. Some even tell silly lies just to preserve their over-bloated pride! For example, when your phone rings right before you but you refused to pick it up and then later on, telling the innocent guy that you were busy whereas, you weren’t! And many more silly behaviours which you ladies should remember.
Frustrating a man wouldn’t make him regard you more. It will only make him adopt new skills on how best to deal with you. Be yourself; be a woman, as you can only influence a man through love and never through aggression! Be the woman; be soft and tender, slow to anger, approachable, loveable, respectful, kind-hearted and feminine! Never try to be a man; let the man be the man and let the woman be a woman! When you preserve your nature as a woman, you stand a higher chance of sealing all deals on gender equality but extremism in the defense of gender equality will render the cause worthless!

6 Reasons Your Blog Content Won’t Go Viral By Tom Treanor

By Tom Treanor

It’s like Deja Vu.
I’ve had this same conversation with representatives from a Fortune 500 financial services company, with a B2B industrial lighting distributor and several consumer-facing companies like wineries, restaurants, real estate agents and retailers.
It goes like this.
Them: We have a blog. We don’t seem to get any traction. Should we continue writing?
Me: Do you know what your customers care about? Are you creating content that teaches them something, solves a problem, entertains them or provides information about tools or resources that they would care about? Are you creating better than average content? Or leaving it to the intern to create (with little guidance and training)?
I think you see where this is going. In order to create content that people care about and will share with their friends, colleagues or social media connections, you need to proactively produce a superior product.
While “viral” content is a great goal, let’s talk about what’s holding most business blogs back from even getting a few shares in social media for each blog post.
Here are 6 reasons your content won’t get shared (and it absolutely won’t go viral):
1) No Sharing Buttons (or they’re hidden)
In order to help your content spread, you have to reduce the friction of sharing. In other words, make it very easy to share via Facebook, LinkedIn Twitter, Pinterest and via email. And no, don’t hide it at the bottom as a tiny button that needs to be expanded to show the real sharing buttons. Put the sharing buttons front and center, so people know where they are and what to do with them.
2) You Have a Boring Headline
Headlines are the first things people see when the visit your website or blog. They’re also what people will see if your content is shared in social media. If you don’t intrigue them with your headline, then why should they bother reading on?
3) You’re Not Connected In Social Media and/or You Don’t Share it Yourself
If a tree falls in the forest but no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? Translated into blogging, this is, “If a post is written but there’s no one around to read or share it, was it really written at all?”.

If you don’t “pre-connect” with your audience (and some heavy sharers in your industry), then you haven’t done your homework in terms of blog promotion. And if you’re connected, you need to share your own content. If you don’t find it worth sharing, why would someone else?
4) Your Posts Are All About You
I have nothing against you, your company, your products, the benefits of your products, the different colors you offer, your financing plans, your client case studies, your demos or your company events. It’s just that it’s not that interesting for me as a reader. Think about what your prospective customers care about and provide some of that instead! See my blogging course to learn several ways that I create customer-focused content that hooks readers and improves “share-ability”.
5) You Don’t Have an Artisanal Attitude to Crafting Content
Blog posts that are produced as “check the box” activities will never be exceptional. If you treat more of your blog posts like an individual works of art versus creating just “content widgets” that roll out of a blog post production factory, you’ll get a hugely different reception to your posts.
In fact, I would argue that “artisanal posts” (exceptional, time-intensive and very valuable) get infinitely more sharing than factory posts (dull, rehashed truisms, not very valuable). In other words, an inspired piece of content can get hundreds or thousands of shares while an uninspired one can get zero.
6) You Don’t Post Often Enough To Become Good At It
Every content creator starts off producing average (or below average) content. Get over that fact.
You have to produce enough content, get enough feedback, see what people respond to and find your own voice…and that requires that you put in some time.

Social Media’s Top 5 Contributions to Society

By Samantha Rupert

www.tmaresources.com
Most of us use some form of social media every day – and whether it’s for personal communication, self-promotion or marketing, we use it religiously. Humans are creatures of habit, but they’re also opinionated and impatient. Those two traits alone are the reasons why social networks thrive. People want the news fast and they want to talk about it now.
Technological advancements have made it easier for people to express themselves and relay news through social media platforms. But many people tend to focus on the supposed negative effects of social media and forget about the good.
Instead of focusing on social media’s pitfalls and absurdities, let me remind you how its influence transforms society for the better. Here are five major contributions that social media has made to society:
  1. It’s a forum for support and safety information during a crisis. There have been several recent disasters during which social media provided the only viable venue for communication. During Superstorm Sandy, most people didn’t have power, but some cell networks and WiFi towers were still operational. Many people used Facebook to detail the destruction and reassure friends or family that they were safe. This week, the tragic Boston Marathon bombings mobilized the worldwide social media community to offer support and info for those affected. Twitter even donated a promoted hashtag (value estimated at $200,000), #OneBoston, to lend support to victims, according to Ad Week. More importantly, networks like Twitter proved to be a safety tool for people in the area. The Boston Police Department tweeted up-to-the-minute news describing injuries, death tolls and areas to avoid. In an effort to keep phone lines clear, police asked people to use social media to communicate.
  2. It’s a valuable aid for crime-solving. Police departments like the NYPD are beginning to investigate gang-related crimes on social media networks. Recently, the NYPD nabbed about 60 gang members who boasted about violent criminal activity on social media. In other states like Oregon, authorities have arrested people for drinking and driving after they bragged about it publicly on Facebook.
  3. It’s a form of political influence. Social media has given a true voice to the people. Last month, the rally for marriage equality spread throughout social platforms as the Supreme Court heard cases regarding same-sex marriage. Brands even took to the trend by creating relevant red equality symbols. Social media is a powerful force for change and it has potential to influence the outcomes of political decisions. The Supreme Court still has not reached a decision in the ongoing debate, but justices were aware of the public support.

How NOT to Criticize Social Media

By Adam Chapman

PHOTO: Wired.com
In the wake of tragedy, communities try to find ways to help each other. As social media is made up of communities, it’s no exception that the same logic would apply. So when no one claimed credit for the Boston Marathon bombings and no suspects were initially identified, some online communities took it upon themselves to aid law enforcement and try to find possible suspects by crowdsourcing the thousands of images and videos for potential bombers. The most organized of them was in a community called “FindBostonBombers” (now closed) on Reddit, one of the largest social news sites.

As of April 19, the subreddit had about 9,000 members. The declared point of the subreddit was “…nothing more than one single place for people to compile, analyze, and discuss images, links, and thoughts about the Boston Bombing.” They also say, “FindBostonBombers is a discussion forum, not a journalistic media outlet. We do not strive, nor pretend, to release journalist-quality content for the sake of informing the public.”
The biggest problem is, of course, that while moderation of the group can prevent some unwanted behavior in terms of posting, it there’s no way to enforce the behavior of anyone who reads the site. If it were purely discussion in an isolated room that’d be one thing; but anyone can read it and act upon it. No amount of disclaimers can truly prevent that from happening.
Which is what traditional media who reported on Reddit should have said. Instead, some reporters took it as an opportunity to offer helpful advice. Alexis Madrigal of The Atlantic gently reminded Reddit, “Guys, this isn't dissecting the quality of an animation on the PS3.” He also went on to remind readers that “San Francisco, the city where Reddit grew up, has an ugly history of vigilantes deciding to track down and convict suspects.” (The association logically being that the “San Francisco Committee of Vigilance” probably has much to do with Reddit’s relocating from Virginia to San Francisco in 2006, despite the Committee being disbanded 150 years earlier.)
Not that Madrigal was alone. Ryan Chittum took time away from his traditional business reporting at the Columbia Journalism Review to write an article subtitled “While Reddit fails again.” And Slate’s Farhad Manjoo lumped Reddit with the New York Post when Reddit wrongly identified suspects. (Though his colleague Will Oremus at least admits that no one made the Post publish their pictures on the front page.)
Before we go on, it’s important to remember a couple of salient facts about Reddit:
  • Last month Reddit had almost 64 million unique visitors
  • There are 5,000 active communities
Put another way, Madrigal et al. felt that 0.014% of a website’s user base basically represented the rest of the site. It’s about the same directing comments about the actions of half of the people who live on an average city block in Manhattan to the whole island. I’m reasonably sure that these journalists aren’t (that) willfully ignorant of how Reddit works.
So when these and other journalists who condescend to social media when they get things wrong, it reeks of a few things, but mostly smugness and fear. Which is great for page views, but not really productive for fixing social media.
Social media has empowered people in ways never seen before. And given that they are people, they’re going to make mistakes. Lots of them. And sometimes they’ll hurt innocent people, and they’ll be wrong for doing so. For example, when talking about how Reddit misidentified a missing Brown University student as a potential bomber, Manjoo admitted, “Caught up in the excitement of breaking news, I was one of many journalists who retweeted news that the Brown student was one of the suspects—a fact which, in the morning, I feel absolutely terrible about.” (Apparently he’s learned a lot about journalism since then.)
But the reality is this: there’s no guarantee that social media can be prevented from doing this again in the future. We can try to create a culture of getting stories right instead of getting them first, but much traditional media has already done away with that idea. Plus, it’s a lot easier for them to cast blame on new technologies than it is to change behaviors.
As last week proved, social media can be an unpredictable, uncontrollable force. It’s important to critique it and to think of ways it can be tempered, especially during crises. Patronizing journalists should set examples for how social media ideally would be used. Blaming people who only wanted to help won’t make your jobs any more secure.

Social Media Best Practices!

By Brad Friedman

Social media has grown from a curiosity to an integral piece of corporate strategy in the space of only a few years. Nearly overnight, business owners have brought on whole teams of specialists to craft effective social media strategies and manage multiplying numbers of social media accounts. The truth is that you can build an efficient and valuable social media strategy by following a few Best Practices.

Successful businesses start by identifying the social networks they need to be active on and the tactics they need to use on each network. A good strategy will discuss the type of content to be posted — including a discussion of “Voice” and “Tone.” Following the social activities of others is useful to come up with your own “style.” When you find a brand whose approach you like, spend some time studying what they do with their followers. Watch for several weeks and get a sense of the cadence of their social activities. Immersion will give you confidence for the next step — Implementation.
Here are some Best Practices as you put your plan into action:
PURPOSE
Nobody has time to waste. Take a look at your strategy and review the reasons your business is implementing a social media marketing plan. What do you want out of social activities? Are you trying to drive people to your website, your blog, or your Facebook page? Focusing on your ultimate goal will guide your next steps: what you do (what channels you will use), when you do it (what schedule you will aim for), and what content you’ll share (blogs, ebooks, testimonials, webinars, tip sheets, etc.). This kind of analysis can head off social missteps (remember the United Airlines baggage handlers’ debacle?) and help you focus on what’s important and productive.

SCHEDULING
Social media is global now; it doesn’t sleep. Your social media management tool needs to allow you to easily schedule messages, unless you have employees who cover all the time zones in shifts! Even while you sleep in, say, Duluth, you will want to schedule messages to go out to your customers in Tokyo during their workday.
If you want to take scheduling to the next level, look for a tool like HootSuite that integrates with a Contact Relationship Manager like Nimble and offers the ability to schedule large batches of messages at once. This will be an incredibly useful timesaver when it comes to managing campaigns or contests that require heavy messaging around a certain period of time.

GEO
When it comes to interacting with your customers, those in different locations may have different needs, speak different languages, or follow different trends. You’re going to want to optimize your searches and filter them by language to help you curate relevant content for different demographics.

KEYWORDS
Through social media, businesses can keep their finger on the pulse of their industry. Setting up keyword search streams provides insight into what your customers think is trendy. This can be great intelligence to help you develop a marketing strategy that focuses on your customer’s lifestyles and personal preferences. There are lots of apps that will help with this; you can set up Google alerts for free and chose how often you want to be notified.
Keywords are useful for keeping track of competitors’ activities but they’re also useful for tracking brands that are complementary to yours. If your product or service is often purchased in conjunction with another product or service, keep an eye on the complementary product’s social media activity. Be ready to take advantage of promotions or recent sales — because these are potential leads ready to be converted.

COLLABORATION
It takes two, as they say, to tango, especially when it comes to being social. An effective social media campaign will benefit from collaboration. Set clear expectations and solicit employee buy-in. Can your employees help you with the management of your social presence? Are they enthusiastic about participating? Do you have a social media management tool that enables you to seamlessly collaborate with your team to ensure you execute an integrated social media management strategy? The answers to these questions can mean a greatly amplified social voice for your brand.

REPORTING
Gone are the days of social media purely being about “building buzz.” It is now a line item in budgets as business owners invest resources to turn social relationships into business opportunities. With a line item comes the need to demonstrate return on investment.
Set up a system for analyzing important metrics (such as click-through rates on shortened links, clicks by region, and top referrers). It’s also important to have access to Facebook Insights and Google Analytics. You’ll want to track your Twitter @mentions and watch trends as people follow you on Twitter. Are you on Google+ or LinkedIn? What metrics will tell you if you are succeeding? You might have to pull your statistics from several places, but the data is valuable and worth a bit of trouble.
Access in-depth granular metrics on the efficacy of your social media programs. This is important because you will understand which messages result in the highest number of conversions, which platform is providing the greatest return — even what time of day is most effective to drive traffic.

WHAT IT TAKES TO SUCCEED
Social media is here to stay, but it’s still in its formative stages, and a lot of brands are still just skimming the surface of its business potential. To maintain a competitive advantage, businesses need to stay alert and aware. Develop a strategy you are comfortable implementing, even if you start small.. Then stay focused. Don’t waste your time telling your followers where you’re eating lunch. Have a purpose, prioritize your tasks, and keep good metrics to track results. When you do these things, your social media efforts will result in increased revenue to your business.

10 Tools for Creating Infographics

By Miranda Rensch

Hello there! I'm Miranda Rensch, Product Manager at SEOmoz and lover of visual communication. Communicating visually is one of the most effective ways to explain complex concepts and relationships, and can be a great way to explain your services/products and create valuable site content. I often use diagrams and whiteboarding in order to communicate new features and concepts internally with my team.
I've compiled a list of tools you can use to create visualizations, or simply use to communicate visually with your teammates. Enjoy, and feel free to add your own suggestions in the comments!

Tools for creating simple infographics and data visualizations

1. Piktochart

Piktochart is a web-based tool that has six decent free themes (and a whole bunch more for the paid version) for creating simple visualizations. You can drag and drop different shapes and images, and there is quite a bit of customization available. You can also add simple line, bar, and pie charts using data from CSV (or manual entry). You can export to PNG and JPG in either print or web quality. Note that with the free version, you get a small Piktochart watermark on the bottom of the PNG / JPG downloads.

2. Easel.ly

Easel.ly is another free web-based tool for creating infographics. You cannot create graphs using real data with this tool, but its really good for conceptual visualizations and storytelling. It has a beautiful user interface and the themes you can start with are gorgeous. The themes support many common purposes: map, flow-chart, and comparison/relationship graphing. This tool has the best selection of well-design objects (people, a bunch if icons, landmarks, maps, animals, etc.) and backgrounds that I've seen throughout this list of tools. Additionally, you can upload your own images with the free version. You can download a web-quality version as JPG. This tool is still in beta, but it seemed to work pretty well to me!

3. Infogr.am
Infogr.am is another free, web-based tool with some really nice themes and a great interface for creating simple infographics. This option also allows you to create charts using real data. There are 31 chart options that offer some really cool displays, like a radial bar graph, scatter charts, bubble graphs, and map charts. You can also add your own images and video. When you're done creating your infographic, you can embed it on a website and publish it to the infogra.am site (I wasn't able to find a way to download). This app is also in beta, but again, seemed pretty solid to me.
